Organization of the Royal Army

The Regimental System

The Royal Army is composed of four lines of organization:
Lines
For Example

1st Line Regiments - National, Royal & Royal Guard

7th Royal Cavalry Regiment
25th Infantry Regiment
2nd Line - Ducal Regiments 100th Artillery Regiment (2nd Salm)
1st Lonenberg Infantry "Archduke Maximillians Own"
3rd Line - Reserve Regiments 45th Reserve Cavalry Regiment
4th Line - Militia Battalions (Landsturm)
Reichlau Landschutz / Reichlau Militia

National Regiment
- A national regiment is considered any regiment which was raised throughout the Kingdom which has not recieved the 'Royal' designation.  These are the standard bread & butter army regiments of the Kingdom.

Royal Regiment
- A royal regiment is considered a regiment raised in the same way as a national regiment, but which has recieved the 'Royal' designation through Royal Decree of the King for outstanding service or performance or when a regiment receives an honour tag.

Royal Guard Regiment
- A regiment not to be confused with a national or royal regiment.  A Royal Guard Regiment is considered the pinnacle of elite in the Royal Army.  All Royal Guard Regiments are part of the Royal Guard Corps, which falls under the direct command of HRM the King, the Commander-in-Chief, Royal Armed Forces.  All Royal Guard Regt's are responsible for the protection of the King and Royal Family but are rotated through regular military service in order to maintain experience and preparedness.  Royal Guard regiments also conduct special services within the Army, utilizing special training above and beyond regular training which reinforces their elite status.  All Royal Guard units rotate between ceremonial and field duties.

Ducal Regiment
- Historically each Duchy was responsible for raising, training and paying for its own regiments and with the Union was expected to provide a certain number of regiments to the Royal Army.  In order to maintain organization, Ducal regiments serving in the Royal Army would be assigned a regimental number different from the number they were raised under.  For example, when Salm raised their 2nd Artillery Regiment, it would be known as the 2nd Salm Artillery.  Once provided to the Royal Army, it would fall under the numbering system in order to maintain integrity of command and organization.  Over time with the advent of the professional officer corps and changes to warfare, the Ducal system of raising and supplying to the Royal Army has been eliminated.  The Duchies do not raise their own regiments however each Duke/Grand Duke/Archduke who retains nominal control of one regiment for ceremonial and civil service purposes.  For historical purposes though, a number of regiments still retain their Ducal name and numbering.  Although historically considered a 2nd line regiment only called up from the Duchies in times of war, they are all equipped and operate at 1st line regiments today.

Reserve Regiment - Reserve Regiments are exactly that, reserve and as such are considered 3rd line guard units whose members serve part-time, recieving recruit training and specialist training on weekends and after-hours.  Each regiment is activated for 6 months of regular service every 4 years and serves alongside first or second line regiments.  Reserve regiments may be mobilized to serve alongside 1st or 2nd line regiments or may be used to augment losses from regular units.  In times of war, a Reserve regiment will be engaged in three possible applications, one as a replacement pool for front line regiments, a training cadre for new recruits or in the field as an operational unit activated for front line service.

Militia Battalions (Landschutz) - The Landschutz or Militia is typically the last line of defense and is only called to active service in times of war or direct threat upon the Kingdom.  The Landschutz is composed of all persons able to bear arms between the ages of 18 and 65 who are not eligible for service in a Reserve Regiment.  It is required that all regions, cities and localities raise and maintain a Landschutz at their own cost.  The Landsturm falls under control of the Royal Armed Forces at all times, however in peacetime this is nominal only.  Reserve officers act as the officers and commanders of the Landschutz.  The Landschutz itself is never activated for a regular service rotation, conducting its training one weekend each 3 or 4 months.  All Landschutz are considered infantry units and are equipped with older equipment seconded or obsoleted from regular service.  Landschutz units can typically act as auxiliary police in situations of public disorder,

Army Organization

The Peactime Army

During peactime, when the Army has not been called to service, all regiments are assigned to Army Districts which match the Ducal peerages of the Realm.  Although officially called Army Districts, they are also known as Ducal/Grand Ducal/Archducal Armies.  For example:

Army District of Reichlau, also known as the Archducal Army of Reichlau.

Each Army District is assigned to either the Royal Army, Army of the Courland, or the Army of Reichlau as follows:

The Wartime Army

When the mobilization order is issued, all regiments are required to report to their assigned posts, barracks and bases.  all Reserve Army components must report to their nearest assigned Barracks to recieve orders on whether they will be activated or not.  All Army District commands cease operations and command over their assigned units and become Corps commands.  All Corps will fall under the command of the Army they are responsible to in peacetime with exception of Montefeltro Corps (XIV) which falls under the Reserve Army in a cadre/training capacity for Reserve Regiments and new volunteers.
